Of the many benefits it can provide, CBD’s effect on, and ability to improve, mental health is a major reason for the deserved hype surrounding cannabidiol.

Cannabis and mental health have been discussed in tandem more prominently as legalization spreads through the nation. The effects of THC have been a particular cause of alert, due to its psychoactive properties, but a lack of long-term studies have provided limited information.

However, there is a good amount of information on mental health and the positive impact CBD can have on it. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and will not get you high.

CBD has shown to be highly effective for sleep and PTSD, which both directly relate to your mental health.

With regards to anxiety, CBD has also shown to be helpful. Roughly 20% of Americans suffer from anxiety in some form. CBD works on the CB1 receptors, which are located in the brain and are a part of the endocannabinoid system in the human body. These receptors help to calm heavy brain activity in the hippocampus.

There have been fears that THC in heavy extended use might cause psychosis conditions in users, though this has never been studied. There was, however, a double blind study in 2012 where 40 patients were given either CBD or their psychosis medicine. The results of this study? Both the psychosis medicine and the CBD were deemed equally effective, however CBD does not carry the side effects associated with prescription medications.

Along with the quality of life benefits — better sleep, less anxiety, etc. — CBD also helps to balance out chemicals in the brain. As CBD works on the endocannabinoid system, it helps to bring chemical imbalance back into even levels.

Chemical imbalances are often the cause for depression and other mental issues. CBD has been shown to help provide clarity of mind and clear the “fog” that is often said to be a symptom of depression.

Stress, anxiety, PTSD, and sleep conditions can all cause mental health issues. Depression can keep someone unproductive and stuck in bed for days, and the lack of motivation can destroy your mental health.

CBD has been shown to help with so many of these conditions, though, and it is legal in every state. The World Health Organization has also listed CBD as helpful for these conditions for years.

As it becomes more normalized, studies on CBD will likely happen in greater detail. This is fantastic, as they will hopefully further show the extent to which CBD benefits mental health.
