CBD has many benefits, including being a natural sleep aid. If you suffer from insomnia, or if anxiety keeps you from getting a good night’s sleep, then CBD is worth exploring.
CBD has been featured prominently in the news over the past few years, making headlines as the miracle solution that can dramatically change peoples’ lives for the better, and for good reason.
Known to treat more and more conditions every day, the benefits of CBD range from easing chronic pain to helping people who suffer from epileptic seizures — and everything in between. Sometimes, from all the new, positive press, it feels like cannabis and its compounds can cure any ailment you may have!
In this article we will be discussing the effects CBD has on sleep.
Cannabis indica has long been known for its drowsy effects on people. Opposite of its cannabis sativa strains, which tend to be uplifting and stimulate creativity, indica strains are known to put the consumer into the couch. You may have heard the old adage: indica, in da couch.
But did you know that CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, can also help aid in sleep?
CBD, in small doses, is known to cause an alert effect on the user. However, in larger doses CBD has a calming effect. It alleviates anxiety. As a result, this relaxation can lead to a deeper, longer sleep.
The CBD itself is not putting people directly to sleep — how you might associate a synthetic sleep aid like Tylenol PM or Ambien. However, it does assist in fighting symptoms that cause insomnia: stress and anxiety. As a result, CBD serves as an effective way to get a better night’s rest.
CBD can also trigger serotonin receptors, as well as the endocannabinoid system. These feel-good serotonin receptors can lead to happiness, enjoyment, and a general sense of stress relief. The relaxing effects can allow for an easier night by calming the mind.
In a study published in early 2019, it was found that in 72 adults, 57 slept better through CBD treatment. That’s nearly 80% of the research group!
If you struggle with anxiety and it’s keeping you up at night, I recommend trying a dose of CBD and see if you fall into that 80%.
I personally struggle with insomnia, and have found that a larger dose of CBD, taken about half an hour to an hour before I go to bed, calms me down enough to sleep through the night.
This can be taken via CBD hemp oil or, my personal preference, infused in food — I normally try making some kind of delicious treat to enjoy before drifting off to sleep. If that’s your preference too, then I would highly recommend some of the recipes we have published! A healthy treat and a good night’s sleep — what could be better?!
